Toothpastes
Toothpastes are a mixture of cleaning agents, binding agents, moisturisers, flavouring and aromatic substances, tensides, preservatives, colourants, water and active ingredients.
Tensides support the cleansing effect, they bind the removed plaque in the solution (foam and water) and reduce the surface tension of the saliva, which enables improved wetting of the dental surface and can bring fluoride to inaccessible areas. The cleaning agents increase the cleaning property of the toothbrush, the removal of plaques and polishing of teeth and filling areas. Strongly abrasive cleaning agents can damage the hard dental substances (e. g., toothpastes against tartar, smoking and tea stains). The colour of a clean tooth cannot be lightened by toothpaste.

The increasing spread of fluoride containing toothpastes is one reason, apart from improved oral hygienic and nutritional habits, why caries frequency is regressing.
