Toothbrushes
Observe the following points when selecting the right toothbrush:
- The head of the brush should not be too large so that the back (distal) areas of the last teeth can be reached easily. The toothbrush should be easily movable in the mouth. The head of the brush should not exceed a length of 2 to 2.5 cm and its width should not exceed three to four bristle rows. The bristle field should be even. Medium brushes are suitable for all patients without lightly bleeding gums.
- The handle should be stable and long enough to ensure an easy and comfortable grip. Angles may be expedient.
- For hygienic reasons the bristles should consist of plastic. The tips of the individual bristles should be round and polished which excludes injury to the hard and soft tissue. Natural bristles have sharp edges and questionable due to the canal in the centre of the brush, where bacteria can settle.
Alternating toothbrushes are a valuable asset in oral hygiene. They have a rotating head which moves like a polishing brush when used.
