Open flap curettage
Deep scaling would be unsuccessful in very deep pockets or difficult-to-access root areas due to lack of visibility. After respective cutting with the scalpel or an HF (High-Frequency) electrode, the gingiva is flapped aside. While retaining the created flap, the root surface can now be deeply scaled. After careful root scaling and removal of granulation tissue the flap is returned to its position and fixed with sutures.
As is the case with deep scaling, the open flap curettage does not lead to any mentionable regeneration of parodontal structures. However, signs of inflammation such as bleeding and discolouration will abate. Curettage is thus regarded as highly significant in surgical parodontal therapy.
