Traumatic damages to teeth during childhood or adolescence are relatively frequent (especially in the upper jaw). If this results in the loss of a tooth and the gap is left untreated, a number of changes in tooth position can be expected. Tooth migration and tipping into the gap, follow-up migration of side teeth, midline relocation as well as faults in occlusion and articulation may be observed.

Speech impediments may also occur.
