Among others, implants consist of the following material groups:

  • Metal implants (especially tantalum, titanium and precious metal alloys with or without calcium phosphate coating);
  • Non-metal ceramic implants (especially aluminium oxide, glass ceramics, hydroxylapatite).

While metal materials generally have improved mechanical properties, ceramic materials have better tissue compatible properties than precious metals. Implants basically consist of an implant base, neck and posts. The implant base serves to anchor the implant in the bone, the implant neck penetrates the mucosa like a connection piece and the implant post, which can be ground like a tooth stump, ensures the attachment of the prosthesis.
