Teeth consist of the three hard tooth substances enamel, dentin and cement, as well as the soft tooth substance (dental pulpa). The dental crown visible in the oral cavity is covered with enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. To approx. 96 %, enamel consists of compounds with the main components calcium, phosphate, carbonate, magnesium and sodium as well as water and organic compounds.
The largest part of the tooth consists of dentin, which is coronally enclosed with enamel and covered by dental cement in the root area. Dentin is the second hardest substance in the human body and consists of approx. 70 % inorganic components and of 20% organic material and water. Dentin is formed by the odontoblasts, whose cell bodies are located at the edge of the dental pulpa.
Cement covers the root surface and its structure is similar to that of human bone. Cement is formed by the cementoblasts and consists of 65 % inorganic components, especially calcium and phosphate.
