- and description of dental direction

“Mesial” is the term used for the dental surface of the individual teeth directed towards "the centre of the dental arch"; the term “distal” is used for the dental surface of the various teeth "away from the centre of the dental arch".

The term "occlusal" means "on the chewing surface" and only applies to the lateral teeth. The area "along the cutting edge" of the incisors, however, is called incisal. The surfaces of the incisors "towards the lip" are called labial, and lateral tooth surfaces facing "towards the cheek" are called buccal. The proportion of various teeth in the upper jaw facing "towards the palate" lies in palatinal position, the respective surfaces of the teeth in the lower jaw, "facing the tongue", lie in lingual position. The term approximal applies to all teeth and generally describes the position "towards the adjacent tooth", as well as interdental, which means "between the teeth".
